Mrkall files for highway position

Norman Mrkall of 1933 Harvey Road has announced his intention of seeking election to the post of highway superintendent in the coming elections. Mrkall, a Republican, will run as an independent candidate for the office now being sought by Ted Kumlander, endorsed Republican, Carl Johns, endorsed by the Democratic Party, and Earl Eastman, also running as an independent contender.

Mrkall, a lifetime resident of the Island, received training in highway development, engineering, and management of heavy equipment during his years of service in the armed forces.

The newly announced contender is chief of the volunteer fire company on the Island and operates a plumbing business here.

Sidway School to be closed in fall

The Charlotte Sidway School, the town's first centralized education constructed in 1937, will not open to classes in September.

The School Board, in a 6-1 vote Monday, decided to discontinue use of the school, which was substantially expanded in 1947 and renovated at a cost of $350,000 in 1977.

Continued decrease in the Island's school population and the spiraling cost of educational programs were some of the reasons given by board members who voted in favor of opening only Kaegebein and Huth Road schools beginning in September.

At one point it was indicated closing Sidway School would save considerable tax dollars ...

RE/MAX Grand Island to sponsor Isle Charity Golf Classic

The Grand Island Charity Golf Classic Tournament committee is pleased to announce that RE/MAX Grand Island, a local real estate company, will be the new sponsor of the charity tournament.

Michael P. McDonough, president and broker/owner of RE/MAX Grand Island said, "I'm very happy to be a sponsor of this very worthwhile event. It is a great opportunity to give back to the community, which has been so good to me.

... If things can be worked out with the state and weather permitting, the seven-story tall RE/MAX red, white and blue hot air balloon will be inflated and tethered Aug. 12 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Beaver Island Golf Course.

It is time for annual Grand Island Lions Club's Spaghetti Dinner

On Monday, March 31, the Lions Club of Grand Island will hold its 33rd annual Spaghetti Dinner at the Grand Island Holiday Inn Resort and Conference Center.

This fundraising event has enabled the club to sponsor local, state and international charities.

In addition, many Island groups support the success of the dinner, which in turn help the Lions fund the Special Kids Picnic, held annually in late June/early July.

This year's event, which is eat-in or take-out, will feature delicious spaghetti and meatballs, salad, Italian bread, soft drinks, milk, coffee and bar beverages.
