Collection and shredding event is April 27 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital parking lot

The Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club is hosting an event that will allow residents to not only help themselves, but to also support their local community. The Rotary Club will hold its first "Shred-It" fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center, at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

For a donation of $10 per banker's box (15 inches-by-12 inches-by-10 inches) or $20 for three boxes, which translates to a 60 percent savings over retail establishments, residents can have bank statements, old insurance policies, outdated financial statements and documents pertaining to medical information professionally shredded. Residents only need to drive up to the shredding location in the southeast corner of the hospital's main parking lot and they will be able to watch as their documents are professionally and securely shredded.

Since identity theft one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S., the Rotary Club encourages residents to take advantage of this opportunity to protect themselves. Plus, the money raised will continue to support Mount St. Mary's Center for Women and to help fund the many additional services and organizations that Rotary Club assists.

In the local community, the Rotary Club has assisted the libraries and historical societies in both Lewiston and Niagara-on-the-Lake; provided defibrillators and other necessary equipment for the Lewiston Police Department; offered support for the coffee cart for patients, staff and family members at Mount St. Mary's; and provided funds for a new transport crib for newborns at the hospital's Center for Women. In addition, the Rotary Club continues the fight against cancer by supporting the Terry Fox Run in Canada and the Relay For Life in the U.S. A large number of international events are also supported by the organization, including young professional exchanges in India and The Netherlands, and support for an annual medical mission by local health care providers to Chiapas, Mexico. The Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Water Street Landing in Lewiston.
