Market Street Art Center presents "A Survey of Paleolithic Art from the Upper Paleolithic Era, 40,000 through 10,000 years ago." The series starts April 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., continuing Thursdays through May 9.
This is a well-researched program by Carol Miller, a photographer, quilter and writer. Discussions include a review of cave painting, including the well-known caves of Altamira, Lascaux and Chauvet, and the lesser known caves of Niaux, Cougnac, Magura and many others. Other types of art discussed include portable art, including spear throwers, discs, pendants and jewelry, and the Venus figures from Western Europe to Siberia. The art will be discussed within the context of history and the development of man and to show how much of it foreshadows the artistic techniques used today.
Registration is not required, but organizers ask that participants let them know in advance if they plan to attend so as to provide adequate seating and refreshments. A free-will donation will be taken.
Market Street Art Center is located at 247 Market St., Lockport. For more information, call 716-478-0239.
