Maziarz: Budget boasts money for road, bridge and highway repairs

State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, has announced the recently adopted New York state budget includes a $75 million increase in funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program, or CHIPS. This is the first increase in funding since the 2008-09 budget.

CHIPS was established by the legislature in 1981, and provides funding for infrastructure repairs of local highways, roads and bridges. The funds go directly to the county, city, town or village for repairs that they operate. Under the 2013-14 budget, Niagara County will receive $6.4 million, an increase of 21.01 percent from the previous allotment. Likewise, Orleans County will receive $2.5 million, an increase of 23.46 percent; and Monroe County will receive $12.4 million, an increase of 19.64 percent.

"Funding for infrastructure improvements is a critical investment that New York state must make," Maziarz said. "The municipalities, many of which maintain state roads, have seen an increase in both the cost of repairing their roads and bridges, but also in the number of them that need repairs. This important investment not only ensures the safety of the public that travels on them, but creates jobs in the construction and transportation industries and improves economic development."
