East canal construction to start this spring

Congressman Brian Higgins had announced continued progress on Buffalo's waterfront with Friday's action by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. board to approve a contract for construction of the east canal.

"Since 2008, over $450 million in public and private investments have transformed Buffalo's waterfront," Higgins said. "The east canal will sit on the edges of the former Donovan building and new HARBORcenter, and create another feature that makes the Buffalo waterfront an attractive place to be for the public and development. I commend Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.'s continued work building the infrastructure that supports the growing private sector interest in and around Canalside."

The $5.764 million project is scheduled to begin this month and be completed within just six months. The bids came in under budget and work will be conducted by local contractor Mark Cerrone Inc. of Niagara Falls.

The source of funding is New York Power Authority funding Higgins fought for during the relicensing settlement agreement.

The east canal will be constructed in the vicinity of the former Donovan Building, which is being transformed by Benderson Development into the future home of Phillips Lytle LLP and a new Courtyard Marriott. The east canal will align with canals currently under construction at the former Aud site.
