What started as a small, annual tradition among friends will become a community event on March 9 when Communify: Buffalo hosts a "Spring Clothing Exchange" at the Pierce Arrow Film & Arts Center, 1685 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo.

Attendees will bring clothing they are ready to part with, hang the clothes, and begin exchanging. All leftover clothing is donated to Goodwill of WNY.

Communify, formerly known as Buffalo Friends Co-Op Initiative, began as a Facebook page encouraging the use of exchanging and bartering, as well as creating opportunities to help others in the community. After receiving a tremendous response, creator Stephanie Brochey, a 2006 Niagara-Wheatfield High School graduate, rebranded and has launched it as Communify: Buffalo.

The "Spring Clothing Exchange" is the first event being held by Communify and Brochey said she hopes it will "bring people out from behind the computer and start to get them connected."

"I've held many clothing exchanges on a much smaller scale with close friends. I felt that this event would be a perfect kick off for Communify; it has the potential to really do some good, and to get people interested in participating in fun events that have positive results within their community," she said.

Second Chic, an Elmwood Village consignment shop, will be there to place items on consignment that attendees would like to try and sell.

"I knew some people would have items they weren't comfortable exchanging due to their worth. We're very excited to have Second Chic there to offer attendees an opportunity to sell those items on consignment at their shop," Brochey said.

Communify is asking for clean, used clothing in good condition. Attendees are asked to leave with the same (or less) amount of clothes that they brought in.

The "Spring Clothing Exchange" will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. There will be a $5 donation at the door.
