State Sen. Mark Grisanti was named "Elected Official of the Year" by the Southtowns Walleye Association, the largest single species fishing club in North America.

As chairman of the environmental conservation committee, Grisanti has oversight of all legislation that relates to sportsmen. His work with the Department of Environmental Conservation in advancing legislation that would lower all fishing, trapping and hunting licenses to the levels they were prior to the last fee increase are among the accomplishments the senator is most proud of during his first two years in office.

"I am absolutely humbled and honored to receive this award. I will continue to be an advocate for sportsmen across New York state," Grisanti said.

In addition, Grisanti sponsored legislation that passed in the Senate, which ensures that information given to the DEC by sportsmen remains private and is not sold to outside vendors. He also worked to pass legislation in the Senate that would remove the requirements that all hunters wear "back tags," and worked to pass legislation making it easier to secure a replacement hunter safety course completion card.

Grisanti has also advanced and supported legislation that would have created a hunting, fishing and outdoor education curriculum to be taught in public schools throughout the state. He has continued to introduce pro-sportsmen legislation as chairman of the environmental conservation committee.

The annual awards banquet was slated to take place Saturday.
