Eighteenth century taverns were places people went to quaff a pint of ale, catch up on the village gossip, or discuss the latest news from England. Some were refined, others rowdy, but they all played an important and colorful role in the colonial community.

On March 2 and 9, from 7 until 10 p.m., Old Fort Niagara will host its eighth annual "Tavern Nights," a fundraising event that recreates a typical late-18th century tavern at the Fort Niagara Officers Club.

In addition to enjoying live period music, traditional beverages and tavern fare, patrons will interact with a wide variety of historical characters. Colonial politicians will argue about the latest acts of Parliament, recruiters will "beat" for British soldiers, and masters will search for runaway servants. Tavern-goers can also take part in games of chance or sing along with bawdy eighteenth century tunes.

Tickets to "Tavern Nights" are priced at $30 per person. They must be purchased in advance by calling the fort at 716-745-7611 Monday through Saturday. Proceeds will benefit Fort Niagara's educational programs.
