The Lewiston Council on the Arts has announced the "Lewiston Discovery Series," a new program for curious minds. The aim of the series is to share the "art of" an interesting mix of creative cultural topics. The series will be presented every other month beginning in February at the Historic Opera Hall, 732 Center St.

The programs will begin at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be offered. No advance registration is required. A suggested $5 donation will benefit the LCA and the Opera Hall restoration fund.

"The Art of Connecting With Poetry" will launch the "Lewiston Discovery Series" on Feb. 20. Paul Hogan, vice president of the John R. Oishei Foundation and renowned local poet and author, will read from his new collection of poems, titled "Inventories," which was released in September. Copies of Hogan's signed book will be available for purchase.

"The Art and Mystery of Chocolate" will be presented by pastry chef Susanne Schilling of Exclusively Schillings (www.exclusivelyschillings.com) on April 17. Learn about the history and types of chocolate, and observe first-hand how to temper chocolate and make basic clusters and ganache.

"The Art and Business of Raising Alpacas" will follow on June 19. Learn about the origins and history of alpacas when Helen and Timm Herman, owners of the Sugartown Alpaca Farm in Ellicottville, share their experience of husbandry and care of these beautiful animals. Learn how yarns are made and see samples of wool and woven products that are produced to exhibit and sell. Rumor has it that there might be a prize-winning alpaca joining this event.

"The Art of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" will delight mystery lovers and Sherlock Holmes fans on Sept. 18. Take a journey of discovery with John Comstock, a member of the Irish Secret Society at Buffalo (The Sherlock Holmes Society of Buffalo) and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Holmes has been known worldwide since he first appeared in publication in 1887. The connection between Holmes, his creator Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Niagara Frontier are not well known, but are fully explored in this presentation by one of Western New York's premier Sherlockians.

"The Art of Landscape Architecture" will end the series on Nov. 20. Landscape architect John Morley will take guests on a fantastic journey through photographs, inspiring the crowd to improve property with sculpture, water features, unique plant materials and wonderful open spaces. Morley is a long-time friend of the LCA, and his designs can be seen throughout the many parks along the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Locally, he designed Seneca Bug Park at the Lewiston Public Library as well as the Lewiston Peace Garden.
