'Snow-less' snowshoeing at Old Fort Niagara

Lack of snow didn't slow down the annual snowshoe event at Old Fort Niagara. Folks didn't get a chance to actually walk on snowshoes or play the game of snow snakes, but everything else was available to show visitors how people worked in and survived the winters in the 1700s.

The equipment needed to stay alive during the cold months was demonstrated along with period board games and the making of hot chocolate, which would have helped to pass time during the winter.

Snow snakes were shown and discussed and Carol Rogers from the New York State Parks Interpretive Office gave a talk and demonstration on the evolution of snowshoes, so folks could learn about them, even though they couldn't actually try them out.

The French soldiers that people watched drilling all day suddenly turned on the crowd and took them prisoners. As they marched the unlucky visitors out of the fort and into the woods to the east, they came across a camp of British scouts and a pitched woods battle ensued, with the scouts chasing off the French soldiers and rescuing the prisoners.

Everyone was treated to hot chocolate in camp before they were led out of the woods and back to the fort. (photos by Wayne Peters)
