While Lewiston readies for its first-ever Cocktail Festival in March, folks up in the Village of Youngstown have been busy in their own forms of fun to help ward off the winter doldrums.

Each Wednesday for close to a year now, musician Dave Thurman of the local Dave Thurman Band has hosted open-mic sessions at Brennan's Irish Pub in Youngstown. The weekly gig has grown in popularity with visiting artists presenting musical genres ranging from traditional Scottish bagpipes to rock, blues, jazz and more. Above, Thurman and company jam before a full house this past Wednesday at the Main Street pub.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, Brennan's will team up with Old Fort Niagara to present something truly different - The Old Fort Niagara Winter Music Festival - starting at 6 p.m. and continuing till 11 p.m. "We are doing an impromptu first annual Winter Music Festival to raise funds for the fort," says Old Fort Niagara board member Aaron Dey. "Admission is free, and it is an evening of period music and 'jollification' provided by dressed volunteers and re-enactors." The event is open to the public and will feature evening food and drink specials. All net proceeds will go to Fort Niagara.

And the good times do not end there for Youngstown. Coming up in March, the village is gearing up for a festive St. Patrick's Day kickoff event on Saturday, March 16, beginning at noon. Presented by the Youngstown Business and Professional Association as a tribute to the late Youngstown Mayor Neil Riordan, the event will feature village trustees, YBPA members and local musicians joining in celebration of St. Patrick's Day at the corner of Lockport and Main streets. Proclaimed by YBPA as a "very green weekend" in the village, revelers will "parade" their way from the Stone Jug to Brennan's for some green beer. Area businesses will also be joining in the fun. Stay tuned to the Sentinel for details. (photo by "Miss Jane")
