For the third consecutive year, Niagara University's American Chemical Society student chapter has been recognized by the ACS Committee on Education.

Dr. Christopher S. Stoj, chair of Niagara's biochemistry/chemistry department, received a letter from the society notifying him that the student chapter was selected for a Commendable Award for activities it conducted during the 2011-12 academic year.

The honor signifies that Niagara's club is in the top third of evaluated ACS student chapters during the 2011-12 year.

More than 362 reports were submitted to the ACS Committee on Education for 2011-12, with only 81 of them receiving commendable awards. The list of award-winning chapters will be published in Chemical & Engineering News and in inChemistry, the student member magazine. The award winning chapters will also be honored at the 245th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans on Sunday, April 7.

The 35-member NU chapter was recognized for both the quantity and quality of the activities that it held on behalf of the American Chemical Society in 2011-12. Chapters were judged on exceptional activities, programs and initiatives described in chapter reports.

Student-officers for the 2011-12 edition of Niagara's ACS student chapter were co-presidents John Leistner and Annie Palermo, senior Eric Stoutenburg (vice president), senior Cory Clugston (secretary), senior Steve Fuest (treasurer), senior Chelsea Recor (community service adviser) and Veronica Campanella (financial adviser). Leistner, Palermo and Campanella graduated in the spring.
