Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church for John Joseph Wesolek of Grand Island, who passed away Jan. 9, 2013.

He was the husband of Phyllis J. Hardy Burns Wesolek, father of David and Michael (Charlene) Wesolek and Donna (David) Witkowski; stepfather of Robert P. II (Penny) and Susan M. Burns, Patricia A. (Randall) Walters and Maureen J. (Kurt) Holme; and grandfather of David and Kimberly Wesolek, Dean Witkowski, Sarah Rowland, Robert P. III, Thomas J. and James A. Burns, Christopher R. and Jonathan E. Walters, Nathan T., Evan W., Juliet M. and Ryan M. Holme. He was also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road.

John loved talking about his Navy experience as a World War II veteran, when he saw extensive duty in the American, Asiatic-Pacific, and European-African-Middle Eastern campaign. He was a recipient of the Victory Medal. In his post-war years, he was a safety specialist at American Standard, where he met his wife, Phyllis, who was the occupational health nurse at the company.

They were married in 1979 and had just recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary. Their home on Grand Island is a cottage, which John spent many hours refurbishing. John was a "homebody" and a great cook. He loved the playing music "by ear" for Phyllis and had his own band and was a member in others as well.

John and Phyllis spent time on the Niagara River on various boats John had purchased over the years. Gardening and canning are other past-times they shared together, as well as making fruitcakes. Talking of their life together, Phyllis says, "We had a lot of fun years."
