Local artist Sarah Westphal, 23, a 2007 Niagara-Wheatfield High School graduate, poses with her grandfather Frank Wright, 82, of North Tonawanda, at a showing this month of her photography and painting at the Margaret E Bacon Gallery at Buffalo State College. He has been the subject of some of her HDR (high dynamic range) photography.

"My inspiration was the desire to prove the unending color relationships that exist in our world. We go day to day not noticing the vast amount of vivid color that surround us. Bringing them into light through photographs and oil paint was my goal. By creating what I see, I am able to show others the true essence of emotions that color has to offer us," Westphal said.

About 80 people came to view her work.

"I am ecstatic with how it turned out and very happy that the Buffalo community could view my work in a professional gallery for the first time. It was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to do it again," the Buff State artist said. "Currently, I am planning on continuing with my work by growing in both fields by expanding my interests. The fine arts is a way to share a part of myself, and the unending journey that it takes me on will be my future. I also will be working as a commercial photographer and continuing to learn the business."

Westphal will graduate this spring with a dual major in painting and photography.
