'So You Think Can Dance' leaps into a 10th season on FOX

Auditions begin Friday, Jan. 18, in Austin 

Detroit, Boston, Memphis and Los Angeles auditions also confirmed 

FOX has picked up the Emmy Award-winning "So You Think You Can Dance" for its 10th season, it was announced by Mike Darnell, president of alternative entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.

Auditions for season 10 will kick off Friday, Jan. 18, in Austin, Texas (venue TBD). The show will continue its search for America's favorite dancers on Monday, Feb. 11, at Saint Andrew's Hall in Detroit; Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Boston Opera House in Boston; Thursday, March 14, at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis; and Friday, March 22, at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

"I couldn't be more proud of the amazing work that Nigel and the entire "So You Think You Can Dance" team has done over the past nine seasons," Darnell said. "This show is truly one of the most compelling series on television and I can't wait to bring it back for season 10."

This past summer, "So You Think You Can Dance" ranked No. 1 in its time period among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens and ranked among the top 20 summer entertainment programs in these demos.

In season 10, producers will travel across the country in search of dancers who represent the best America has to offer. Those who shine during auditions will be given a ticket to Las Vegas for callbacks, where they work with top choreographers to learn and then be judged on multiple styles of dance. The best of the best will then move on to the live competition shows in the summer.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at each venue. Auditioners traveling to cities for the open calls should make arrangements to stay for at least two days following their initial audition in the event of a callback.

Dancers must be either a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident of the U.S. or possess a current legal employment authorization card enabling him/her to seek employment freely in the U.S. (i.e., without restrictions as to employer) by the date specified in the eligibility rules. Dancers must be no younger than 18 or older than 30 years of age on the first day they register for auditions. Any dancer who is a minor in his/her state of residence must also have a parent or legal guardian sign all required documents. In September, ballet dancers Eliana Girard and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp won season nine and were voted America's favorite dancers. They each were awarded a cash prize of $125,000. Girard and Wespi-Tschopp are currently featured on the cover of Dance Spirit magazine and, together with the finalists from this past season, recently completed a cross-country, 30-city performance tour.

Throughout its nine seasons, "So You Think You Can Dance" has received 28 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and garnered 11 Emmy wins, including Outstanding Choreography for Mia Michaels in 2011, 2010 and 2007; Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo in 2011; Tyce Diorio in 2009; and Wade Robson in 2008 and 2007. The series also received awards in the category of Outstanding Costumes for Soyon An and Grainne O'Sullivan in 2010 and Soyon An in 2009, and Outstanding Lighting Design in 2011 and 2012. Recently, "So You Think You Can Dance" celebrated six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including consecutive nods in the categories of Outstanding Reality-Competition Series and Outstanding Host for Reality or Reality-Competition Series for Cat Deeley. The series won a 2012 TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming, a 2012 Critics' Choice Television Award in the category of Best Reality Series - Competition and Deeley won the 2012 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Reality Show Host.
