Roser, Salada meet about shooting

Christopher Roser, superintendent of Lewiston-Porter schools, met with Lewiston Chief of Police Chris Salada this week in the wake of the Dec. 13 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"The staff had concerns after the shooting in Connecticut," Salada explained. He met with Roser to identify possible ways to improve safety in the schools, as well as see where the police can help.

Salada said there are many angles to look at on this issue and there will be several meetings to ensure all possible safety concerns are handled.

"The police department is keeping an extra-close eye on all the local schools," he said.

On the Lewiston Police Department's Facebook page, Salada issued the following statement:

"The Lewiston Police Department is cognizant of parents' concerns regarding the safety of their children especially after the horrific events in Newtown, Conn., last Friday. As always, LPD along with other area police agencies, are working with school officials to provide the safest environment possible in our multiple schools throughout the town and village of Lewiston.

"The following link is a pamphlet provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - in PDF form; this pamphlet gives tips to survive an active shooter and how to respond when law enforcement arrives. The pamphlet also has an area for you to fill in emergency numbers and contact information for your office or public building. LPD encourages everyone to read through this material as an additional resource to your pre-existing policy."
