Actor Jay Thomas returns to participate in the annual "Late Show" holiday quarterback challenge, and singer Darlene Love marks her 19th year performing her classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on the broadcast

The holiday traditions continue on the "Late Show with David Letterman" when actor Jay Thomas and musician Darlene Love return to ring in the celebrations on the broadcast, Friday, Dec. 21 (11:35 p.m.), on CBS.

Thomas returns to participate in the annual "Late Show" holiday quarterback challenge, where he and Letterman each take turns throwing footballs at the "Late Show" Christmas tree to try and knock off the giant meatball perched atop the tree. This tradition started on Dec. 30, 1998, when former New York Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde was on the broadcast. He and Letterman tried unsuccessfully to knock the meatball off the tree, so Thomas, also a guest on the show that night, came on stage, took a throw and hit the meatball off the tree immediately. Also, Thomas will recount his hilarious encounter with "Lone Ranger" star Clayton Moore, one of Letterman's favorite stories, which Thomas recounts each year during his holiday visits.

In another favorite "Late Show" holiday tradition, legendary singer Darlene Love will perform her classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" for the 19th year on the broadcast, backed as always by "Late Show" musical director Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

The "Late Show's" annual holiday broadcast rounds out a star-studded week on the CBS broadcast. On Monday, Dec. 17, actor Tom Cruise, star of the new film "Jack Reacher," visits, with a musical performance by MNDR. Actor Paul Rudd, star of the new film "This is 40," talks to Letterman, while Grammy-winning musician Alicia Keys performs. On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Letterman gets a look at the coolest toys this holiday season during the show's annual holiday toy demo, and actor Seth Rogen, star of the new movie "The Guilt Trip," and comedian John Witherspoon appear on the broadcast. Actress Katie Holmes, star of the new Broadway play "Dead Accounts," visits Thursday, Dec. 20, along with musician Jon Bon Jovi, who will talk to Letterman and also perform on the broadcast.
