Kim's International Café is serving up "from scratch" cuisine from American classics to Italian and traditional Asian dishes.

Owner Joe Rocco, originally of Youngstown, renovated the existing space to create Kim's Café, at 2028 Lockport Road, Wheatfield, at the gate of the air base.

He and Chef Kim Rubino offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The business opened about a month ago and is getting much of its customer base from employees and servicemen and women at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Kim's serves everything from traditional American-style breakfasts to hamburgers, subs and Asian stir-fry. Everything on the menu is homemade, and the portions are fit for a king, according to Rubino.

Rubino, originally from South Korea, has an extensive culinary background, including work as the international chef at Niagara University, as well as a chef at the Seneca Niagara Casino, and at the restaurant Indian Kitchen.

Her specialty is the "Gate Opener," a half-pound hamburger with a blend of spices and "secret" ingredients, served on a flavored roll on a bed of coleslaw, topped with cheddar cheese and an egg, and served with a side of fries. Every Friday, the café offers a fish fry for dine-in or takeout.

For more information or to call ahead for takeout, call Kim's Café at 716-524-2253.
