The holiday season is here with shopping, baking and decorating under way. Holiday events and activities are happening all over Niagara County and next weekend will be no exception, with "Christmas in the Village" in Youngstown.

The event will take place Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with several activities scheduled at the Youngstown Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St., and the First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Main and Church streets in the village.

Events at the Red Brick School Village Center include:

•An Artisan Christmas Market will be open in the gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with more than 30 vendors selling various items from gluten-free baked goods to clothing, fine art, walking staffs, Peace Garden bricks, jewelry, pottery, woodwork and Native American crafts.

"They're all local vendors, from Youngstown, Lewiston, Ransomville," says Tina Oddy, chair of the Youngstown Recreation Commission, one of the organizers of "Christmas in the Village."

She says some vendors are also expected from beyond the county area.

•A children's "Party with Santa" will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. It will include face painting, cookies and crafts.

•Musical entertainment can be heard in the Village Center by Step in Time: Monti and Marsha Jones, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Julie Winden on the trumpet from 2 to 4 p.m.

•Children's crafts will be available in the Youngstown Free Library inside the Red Brick School from 1 to 3 p.m.

•Horse-drawn carriage rides provided by Lewiston's Tour d'Elegance of Niagara will be available outside of the Red Brick School from noon to 4 p.m.

•The Porter Historical Society will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing tours of the museum as well as offering a selection of postcards and books in the artisan market in the gym.

•The Youngstown Lions Club will offer hot dogs and popcorn free of charge.

•Rudolph, Frosty and the Grinch will be wandering the Red Brick with "Happy Holidays" for all.

Events at the First Presbyterian Church include:

•A "Victorian Tea," from 2 to 4 p.m., and a Nativity display, also from 2 to 4 p.m.

In addition to a planned display of an 18th century camp scene outside the Red Brick School from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Old Fort Niagara will hold a raffle for family passes to the fort's "Castle by Candlelight." The program will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 15 and 22, at Old Fort Niagara.

Visitors can adventure through a display of 18th century common soldier's possessions, winter equipment and a nine-man tent. The program will also feature reproductions of artifacts from the fur trade, and visitors will be able to discover how winter fur traders, or hivernants, survived long Great Lakes winters.
