New York State Police in Zone II conducted a five-day traffic safety initiative from Nov. 21 to 25. Zone II covers Erie and Wyoming counties. Police conducted numerous traffic details, including Operation Hang Up, which targeted distracted drivers, DWI checkpoints, DWI saturation details, and speed details on the area Interstates. Troopers also participated in a joint DWI checkpoint with Cheektowaga Police, the Erie County Sheriff's Office and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Police.
In total, Troopers:
•Issued 15 tickets for distracted driving, 170 tickets for speeding, and 367 tickets during the five-day detail.
•Made four arrests for DWI, and seven arrests for unlawful possession of marijuana.
•Investigated 11 accidents with no injuries reported; six of the 11 accidents were car-deer collisions.
