On Monday evening, the Grand Island Board of Education held its regular meeting "on the road" at Kaegebein Elementary School and were treated to pre-meeting festivities as part of the school's 60th anniversary celebration. Trustees and administrators toured the facility, viewed items from the 1952 cornerstone time capsule and listened to the school song and other selections by the fourth and fifth grade choir. The business meeting continued afterwards in the Kaegebein auditorium.

School Related Personnel representative Linda Lichtenthal talked through a PowerPoint presentation on the many duties of SRPs. She covered just a fraction of what the school nurses, clerks, aides, monitors, bus drivers, custodians, and many others do to support students, teachers and administrators each day at the five district buildings. School Board President David Goris commended the group, calling its members vital, and saying that they are usually the first to greet a student at the beginning of the day and the last to see him home at the end. The presentation will be posted to the district website:www.k12.ginet.org.

In other business, Joe Giarrizzo, director of school business services, reported that all windows at Huth Road Elementary School will be repaired at no cost to the district during the February break. The windows have been difficult to open and will receive new ballasts.

Giarrizzo also reminded the board of the communications push regarding the public referendum for the proposed news transportation center. The anticipated cost of the project is $6,377,000. Details are posted to the district's website and Facebook page. In addition, lobby boards and brochures detailing the bus garage will be available at the district office, all five school buildings and at the current transportation center.

The curriculum report from Karen Cuddy-Miller, director of curriculum and instruction, included information on this year's DECA installation dinner. The business club boasts a membership of 155 Grand Island students, the second largest club of its kind in New York state. The featured speaker at the dinner was GIHS graduate Corey McGowan, organizer of the Taste of Grand Island in October. McGowan spoke of his own DECA experience as being invaluable to him now in adult life.

Upcoming events of interest at the schools are:

•High School Share the Holiday Magic program on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Viking Mall.

•The next Board of Education meeting is Monday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Veronica E. Connor Middle School The board will tour the facility.
