Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports an investigation is ongoing into what his office is calling an attempted suicide by a person in custody at the Town of Grand Island Court Monday morning.

Sean C. Riordan, age 20, of Grand Island, had just been arraigned before Judge Mark Frentzel, and was properly secured and being led out of the Town Hall courtroom at about 11:39 a.m., when he ran from the deputies who were escorting him and jumped over a railing on the second floor. He fell approximately 15 feet to the floor below.

Detective Brian O'Hara and Deputy Anthony Yavicoli provided immediate first aid, and the Grand Island Fire Co. responded to the scene to assist. Riordan was transported by ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center, where he is still being treated at this time. His condition is listed as stable.

Riordan had been arrested by sheriff's deputies on Saturday, Nov. 17, at his residence in the Town of Grand Island. While on patrol in District 1 at approximately 3:20 p.m., Deputy Chris Ginnane and Deputy Chris Soluri of the sheriff's Grand Island substation responded to a 911 complaint of a disturbance a man, identified as a roommate, had reported that Riordan had stabbed him with a knife during an argument.

Riordan was charged with assault in the second degree, a class D felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, and menacing in the second degree, both of which are class A misdemeanors. He was then transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment and brought back to Town Hall Monday morning.

According to the sheriff's office, their preliminary investigation shows that all sheriff's office policies and regulations had been adhered to by the deputies who were transporting Riordan.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of Senior Detective James Hatch and O'Hara.
