AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers to help taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.

"In the last several years, we've assisted thousands of people in preparing and filing their tax returns," said Ken Greulich, local coordinator for the Lewiston site. "We could not do it without our volunteers, who make an indelible mark on the communities they help."

Started in 1968 with just four volunteers at one site preparing 100 tax returns, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide now involves more than 35,000 volunteers and serves 2.6 million taxpayers at nearly 6,000 sites nationwide. In fact, it's one of the most effective volunteer programs in America.

"But even though it has grown a lot, it is still all about the grassroots," Greulich said. "Volunteers will be helping people in our own community with a much-needed service that's free, individualized and has no strings attached."

Almost four out of five people who turn to AARP Foundation Tax-Aide are 60 or older, but it helps people of all ages. Household incomes aren't high. For many of them, a tax refund could mean they won't have to choose between paying for groceries and keeping the lights on.

Volunteers will work with taxpayers directly, filling out tax returns and looking for refunds. Experience isn't necessary; volunteers will be trained on the latest tax forms and software.

For more information, contact Greulich at [email protected], visit http://www.aarp.org/tavolunteer8 or call toll-free 1-888-687-2277. Deadline for application is Dec. 15. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is offered in conjunction with the IRS.
