The Lewiston Community Lions Club announces the winners of its annual Peace Poster contest. First-prize winners from each school entered include Ciara McGrane (grade six) of Stella Niagara Education Park; Mariah Rickard (grade eight) of St. Peter's Lutheran School (Sanborn); and Hannah Darcak (grade six) of St. Peter's R.C. School in Lewiston.

This year's poster theme was "Imagine Peace." Awards and a reception were held at Stella Niagara on Friday, Oct. 26. Judges included Martha Haseley, a retired schoolteacher of 43 years, Tanis Winslow and Andrew Dickerson of Artpark.

Poster contest chairs Lion Ron and Marlene Craft said the judges were impressed by the creativity of the students. The winners now will face even stiffer competition as they advance to compete with the 375,000 entries submitted worldwide.

Internationally, one grand-prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize is a cash award of $5,000 and a trip for the winner and two family members to an awards ceremony on Lions Day at the United Nations. Cash awards of $500 will be given to each merit winner.

The Lions Club would like to thank Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Reiter, Town of Lewiston Councilman Mike Marra and Village of Lewiston Trustee Dennis Brochey for attending and addressing the participants. The club also wishes to thank the Village Bake Shop, Apple Granny Restaurant, Dimino Lewiston Tops Market and Favorite's Pizza for generously contributing refreshments to the poster awards reception and helping to make it a success.
