The Town of Lewiston has news with regards to the Academy Park ice rink operations for the upcoming winter season. Leading off, the town reported at its Oct. 22 meeting it had reached agreement with national operator Ice Rinks 2 Go to manage a 60-day operation schedule for this winter at the Academy Park rink. Proposed operation dates are Dec. 1 to Jan. 27, 2013. On Oct. 22, the Town Board inked a $154,654 contract with the firm that provides for a five-year agreement. It reported that local sponsorships to assist with rink operations are now being explored.

The town also announced on Oct. 22 it would be doing 3.75-kilowatt electrical upgrades at Academy Park to service rink operations and eliminate the need for the diesel generators that were used at last year's rink.

Town Recreation Director Michael Dashineau reported that a fee schedule is being employed by the town to allow for special use events this year. Actual rink use for local residents would continue at no charge; skate rentals would be the same as last year.

This week, he announced the Town of Lewiston will begin accepting reservations for birthday parties or other approved event ice rink rentals. "The Town of Lewiston Recreation Department will be taking applications for ice rink rentals for December and January of this winter. Days available are very limited. Rentals can be used for any type of party or approved ice activity, including birthday parties," said Dashineau.

Rentals can be done on most Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Fee for a two-hour rental is $250. Rental includes all ice time, skate rentals, rink guards and supervision, use of the warming tent, and any available equipment, including hockey goals, and skating aids.

In other recreation news, Dashineau reported that open interviews for winter seasonal youth positions would be taking place Wednesday, Nov. 7, and Thursday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

Positions available include ice rink skate guards, ice rink service desk workers, basketball referees, and basketball instructors.

"Lewiston Recreation is often the first employment opportunity for our community's youth, and serves as a vital training ground for the application and interview process for so many Lewiston teenagers," said Dashineau.

Applicants can apply at the interview process and should bring identification. Applicants should be 16 years old or have up-to-date working papers. For more information, contact Dashineau at 716-754-8213, ext. 254, or email [email protected].
