Islander named Lt. Colonel
William Basnett, director of operations for the 914th Tactical Airlift group, Niagara Falls, an Air Force Reserve Unit, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel, it was announced today.
Lt. Col. Basnett entered the Air Force in 1954 as a flight cadet. He completed basic jet pilot training at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, in 1955 and won his pilot's wings and commission at that time.
He served on active duty when he became a member of the Air Force Reserve. ...
Lt. Col Basnett is married to the former Judith C. Rush of Ware Shoals, S.C. The have three daughters and two sons and reside (on) Rob Roy Park, Grand Island.

Islanders choose Bush in record turnout
Although Bill Clinton won the bid for president over now lame duck President George Bush Tuesday, he wasn't the high vote getter on Grand Island.
Apparently Island residents were not in line with the rest of the country as the count here was 3,376 for Bush, 3,103 for Ross Perot and 2,895 for the governor of Arkansas.
However, Decision '92 brought the highest voter turnout in Grand Island history, with 9,374 or 86 percent casting their ballots. ... According to the Erie County Board of Elections, Grand Island has a total of 10,762 registered voters.
