Halloween trick-or-treat hours for residents in the Town and Village of Lewiston have been set for Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m., and 4 to 8 p.m., respectively.

In the Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter, hours will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

With that in mind, Lewiston Police Chief Chris Salada offers residents some Halloween safety tips.

"The Lewiston Police Department would like your children to have a fantastic and safe evening of trick-or-treating this Halloween," he said. "It is their sincere pleasure to assist you in this, by offering some tips on how to keep our children safe while they are out trick-or-treating."

•Never allow your child to trick-or-treat alone. Walk around with your child.

•If your child is walking around with a group of friends, know the exact route and when he will be back.

•Inspect treats thoroughly and throw away anything that looks opened or tampered with.

•Never approach or enter a house that is dark or not familiar to you.

•Remind your child if he is approached by a stranger to call 911, find an adult, or go to the closest house for help.

•Try to use sidewalks whenever possible

•Use caution and look both ways before crossing the roadway.

•Carry a flashlight and wear reflective clothing if possible.

•Last, but not least, have fun!

The LPD will have extra officers patrolling the streets. Do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns prior to, during or after Halloween. The weekday phone is 716-754-8477, after hours 716-438-3394, and for an emergency, call 911.

Youngstown residents can call the police at 716-745-3623. Porter residents can call the Niagara County Sheriff's Office at 911 with an emergency.
