During the first week of October, students and staff at Lewiston-Porter Middle School enjoyed excitement and activities in preparation for the annual homecoming football game.

Spirit Week is a longstanding tradition that many students look forward to each year in schools across the country. As an expression of school spirit, students at L-PMS participated in different activities each day, which included: hat day, jersey day, clash color day, class color day, and green and white day.

This year, the student council decided to add a green and white twist to the fun. For class color day, each grade level was assigned an "awareness color" connected to a cause that had meaning to the students of L-PMS. Sixth grade was assigned purple for animal abuse awareness. Seventh grade was assigned orange for hunger awareness, and eighth grade was assigned red for drug and alcohol abuse awareness.

During Spirit Week, the students spent time during their advisory periods learning about and discussing each of the causes represented by the colors assigned. Students were then given the option to raise money for the causes by wearing their class color and/or donating money to the cause. The class to raise the most money would be declared the winners and would have the right to choose which cause would receive the combined monies raised.

The middle school students stepped up to the plate and eagerly and actively participated in this new spin on class color day. They saw the value and meaning of showing school spirit through an act of good will and selflessness. In total, the students of Lewiston-Porter Middle School raised a total of $400. This money was raised by the combined effort of the students, the student council, as well as a $50 donation by the Builders Club.

The sixth-graders were announced as the winners of this friendly competition at the pep rally on the final day of Spirit Week. The excitement was palpable as the students cheered in excitement and pride over their accomplishment. What an excellent way to show and feel school spirit and pride. They were all winners as they came together to create positive change as a unified student body.

The sixth-grade class, supported by their fellow upperclass mates, chose to donate the $400 raised to the SPCA of Niagara. The decision was an easy one, as all grade levels were eager to bring awareness to this very important cause.
