Islanders are advised to have a cup of coins ready, as well as all that candy, when the gremlins come to the door this Halloween.

That's because some children will have UNICEF collection boxes with them along with a candy bag when they go door-to-door Oct. 31 in one of the longest-running youth volunteer initiatives in the U.S. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has been active each Halloween on Grand Island for decades. Now in its 62nd year, this original "Kids Helping Kids" effort provides an outlet for children to help kids in desperate need around the world.

Donations to the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will provide health care and immunizations, clean water, education, and more for children in other countries.

Teachers in Island schools are using educational materials from UNICEF to promote understanding for global citizenship at all levels. Little boxes will be distributed to all who want them.

Right now, more than a million children are facing extremely difficult and dangerous conditions, according to local UNICEF Chairman Lee Tetkowski. She said she hopes Islanders can surpass the goal of raising $2,000.

Checks made out to U. S. Fund for UNICEF can be folded and put into those little boxes or mailed to Tetkowski at 1530 Whitehaven Road.

This week, the Grand Island Town Board issued a proclamation marking the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF drive. In making the proclamation, the board said, "Halloween is a day of ghosts, goblins, parties and fun for children in the United States, but for children in developing countries, that day is just another day in the struggle for life.

"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has evolved into one of the largest supported programs in the U.S. ... Money raised through UNICEF's Halloween collection has been used to provide clean water supplies, good nutrition, immunization, and educational opportunities to children in over 100 developing countries."

The board proclaimed Wednesday, Oct. 31, as UNICEF Day on Grand Island.

Trick or treat hours on Grand Island are 5 to 8 p.m.
