The Western New York Association of Historical Agencies is holding its annual conference on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Genesee Country Village in Mumford. The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This year's theme is "I Want You: Recruiting Students and Volunteers to your War Commemoration."

Getting students into your museum, whether they are elementary, high school or college, is a challenging task for any historical society. Presentations by Derek Maxfield, history professor at Genesee Community College, and Doug Kohler, a teacher at Clarence Middle School and Erie County historian, will give you tips on bringing students to your institution, using anniversary commemorations of the War of 1812 and Civil War as examples.

Lee Simonson, of the Historical Association of Lewiston, is the featured keynote speaker. His talk is titled, "Building a Strong Volunteer Force." Simonson is the driving force behind Lewiston's War of 1812 commemorations, and was WNYAHA's 2009 Individual Achievement Award winner.

This year's conference includes a behind the scenes tour of the storage facility at the newly renovated Wehle Gallery, and a view of the Susan Greene Costume collection, described by Karen Augusta, appraiser for "Antiques Roadshow," as "a gem" that "stands alone as one of the finest collections of its kind in North America."

WNYAHA is a not-for profit field service organization that provides training, technical assistance and networking opportunities to cultural heritage organizations in Western New York.
