Paul Robinson, coordinator of the Grand Island Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP) Walk, reports that this year's event will top the $5,000 mark in funds raised for the first time in more than 10 years.

The CROP Walk was held at Beaver Island State Park on Sunday, Oct. 14.

A preliminary total of $4,636 was raised from the event on Oct. 14. "We'll certainly top $5,000 for the first time since 2000," said Robinson, who noted the most the event ever took in on Grand Island was more than $5,600 in 1997.

This year's CROP Walk had about 70 participants walking one of several routes in the park.

Robinson thanked the participants and their benefactors, as well as the businesses who supported the event.

"What really thrilled me was the involvement of all the businesses and the chamber," Robinson said. Pledge envelopes were available at many locations.

Robinson noted that the generosity of businesses encourages people to walk and gain some empathy for those who labor every day to survive in impoverished countries around the world.

"That's the point. It's to encourage people to come out and walk. My goal is to see lots of walkers because when you walk, I think you're more likely to feel the fact that women walk miles, and miles and miles to get water and food," Robinson said.

Money raised will support the Neighbors Foundation, the Trinity food pantry, and Church World Services.
