Support the Islettes

Teddy's Islettes Baton and Drum Corps presently are conducting its one and only fundraising campaign in the form of a candy bar sale. Mrs. Teddy Linenfelser, instructor and director of the twirling group, today stressed that no other selling projects are conducted by the Islettes throughout the year. Proceeds of the annual sale are used to purchase equipment for the drum and rifle section of the unit.

Today's Islettes, totaling more than 125 Island youngsters, practice weekly in the firehall. Twirling classes now are near capacity but there are still a few openings for drummers as well as flag and rifle carriers. ...

The twirlers were organized in 1960 and have appeared in local and area parades every season since.

Isle again loses out on HUD funding

Grand Island continues to be the orphan community when it comes to obtaining Housing and Urban Development funding for senior citizen housing.

The 128 units proposed by Belmont Shelters apparently is just another lost cause, according to information received from the Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Supervisor LaVerne C. Luther Monday said the developers have been informed their application under Section 202 "has not been selected for funding."

Housing for the elderly planned by Frank Levin at 1700 Whitehaven Road, first announced about May of last year, also seems to be a lost cause at this point. The answer to the question "Why?" always seems to be "There isn't any money for the project."

Mr. Luther has no intention of giving up the ship, according to his remarks at Monday's Town Board meeting. ...

Wood buys back Fantasy Island

Charles R. Wood, former owner of Fantasy Island Amusement Park, plans to repurchase the park from International Broadcasting Corp, the company he sold it to in 1989.

IBC filed for bankruptcy in September 1991 and Wood hopes to promote the park back to what it was when he previously owned it. He feels Fantasy Island has potential as a picnic park, which it always has been and can bring in the business of large companies on that basis.

Wood also owned The Great Escape Fun Park in Lake George, which IBC bought with Fantasy Island for $36.2 million with the promise to put another $4.5 million into the parks. IBC didn't invest that money, which caused the decline of the parks.

Fantasy Island also suffered, according to Wood, because of the economy and the rainy, cool weather this summer. He's hoping the weather will improve, which will help the overall business.

The federal bankruptcy court is expected to approve the sale next month.

Beaver Island Clubhouse coming along

Earlier this year in May, 10 years after the Beaver Island State Park Casino was decimated by fire, construction began on the new clubhouse.

Crews are now five months into the two-phase project, with a completion date expected to come sometime in the spring of 2003.

"This has been a long, hard battle ... to make sure it gets built and built properly, State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt told the Dispatch on Tuesday.

When complete, the new clubhouse will reflect the architectural integrity of the old casino.
