St. Peter's R.C. School in Lewiston has recently participated in Jumpstart's Read for the Record, which is an annual reading celebration in the U.S. that highlights the need for a quality early education by mobilizing adults and children to set a record for the largest shared reading experience.
At St. Peter's, teachers connected the book "Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad," by Jacky Davis, with lessons on the following themes: sharing, feelings and being a hero, treating others the way you would like to be treated.
Guest readers spoke about the importance of literacy and planned various activities, including a creative writing activity.
Carol Beebe, project director of Niagara University's Department of Education, provided kindergarten students with special Beanie Baby reading buddies.
"Jumpstart's Read for the Record is a call to action to Americans to recognize the importance of quality early education, especially for our most vulnerable children," said Jessica Lemke, St. Peter's pre-K teacher. "When children start behind, they tend to stay behind. We are proud to support this campaign."
