Get ready: Connor Middle School musical runs Oct. 11, 12, 13

It's already time for a "spring" musical at Veronica Connor Middle School.

Seventy students at the school will present "The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr." Oct. 11, 12 and 13 next week.

This year's musical is about five months earlier than last year, but demand for use of the Grand Island High School auditorium prompted a change in schedule.

"This way we can set up here for weeks and we can be the only group in here," said Andrew Boron, who directs the show with Sarah Russo. Rehearsals for last year's show were sandwiched in between rehearsals for the high school musical, music department concerts, and the Corporate Bowl. Though the production last year was spread out over 10 weeks, this year's production began just five weeks ago.

"They've done a great job getting the show ready in the short amount of time," Boron said.

"I've been very impressed with how well they've put everything together," Russo said. "They've been wonderful."

Russo said the musical is based on the "Flat Stanley" children's book series by Jeff Brown. Stanley(played by Sam Sommer) makes a wish to go on great worldwide adventures. He gets flattened by a bulletin board and turns two-dimensional, allowing him to be mailed to places like Hollywood, Paris and Hawaii.

Boron described the production as "a pop-rock show" that "hits a lot of genres" in music, including country, calypso and Broadway show tunes.

Russo said the musical, like the books, encourages children to go out and explore their world, but Stanley learns also, though, that home is not a bad place to be either.
