Seventeen Grand Island volunteers gathered at the Riverside-Salem Environmental Chapel on a rainy morning last Saturday, Sept. 22, to participate in the Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper's annual Shoreline Sweep.

Grand Island was one of 20 Western New York sites that participated in the event. Volunteers paired up and filled out a checklist of each piece of litter picked up (for example, plastic bottles, beverage cans, etc.), which will be entered into a national database to assess what litter is especially problematic and what policies might be developed to reduce this litter in the future. Island volunteers concentrated on problem areas such as the East River Marsh, the South Grand Island Bridge, Buckhorn State Park and the overlooks. Renewable and non-renewable trash was sorted into separate bags and picked up by the Town Highway Department. John's Pizza & Subs provided free pizza for the wet and hungry volunteers.

Some of the volunteers are pictured with bags full of the detritus from their sweep.
