Lewiston-Porter Class of 2011 graduate Meahgan Murphy, a member of the U.S. Navy, currently serving on the USS George Washington, was recently recognized as the "GW/CVW5 Sailor of the Day" in the GW Flyer, a publication for sailors aboard the Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

Murphy, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy straight out of high school, attended Great Lakes, Ill., for boot camp in August 2011 and completed A School Training in Pensacola, Fla., in January. A survival equipment member assigned for the next three years at the Astugi, Japan, duty station, she currently serves as an airman VCR-30-Det. 5 Unit 25532 on the George Washington.

In recognizing this sailor from Lewiston, the GW Flyer reported the following:

"Since checking onboard with VRC-30 only six months ago, PRAN Meahgan Murphy has been a dynamo of limitless drive and constantly faces each new challenge with a professional and positive 'can-do' attitude. She has already finished qualifications for flight deck familiarization, brake rider, oil consumption, fuel surveillance, corrosion control apprentice, multiple ground support equipment licenses, ground and afloat C-2A plane captain, ordnance handling team member, and is hard at work on her EAWS qualification. PRAN Murphy's unselfish and hard-charging demeanor is one of the reasons for the detachment's continued success and demonstrates why she is highly deserving of recognition as the 'GW/CVW5 Sailor of the Day.'
