At 12:41 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Baseline and Alvin roads. The force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to roll over, although the driver was able to escape from the wreckage prior to the arrival of responders, according to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Osinski.

One driver, 22-year-old Cassandra Coffee of Grand Island, sustained minor injuries despite being a rollover victim, and she declined hospitalization. The other driver, 59-year-old Mary Zulawski of Grand Island, also sustained minor injuries and declined hospitalization treatment after evaluation by GIFC medics.

Grand Island Fire Chief Kevin Koch reports that this was the second serious rollover incident within a four-day period and that seat belts and air bags "probably saved lives." Meanwhile, following triple fatalities on the I-190 on July 9, Grand Island firefighters/medics have had to contend with 12 other motor vehicle accidents. Although most of these occurred during broad daylight, when driving conditions were favorable, driver inattention appears to be a major contributing factor. Keeping alert at all times and driving defensively would go a long way towards cutting down these senseless accidents, he stressed.
