Aug. 1 marked the kickoff to a national effort called "Feds Feed Families." The 914th Airlift Wing made it a personal challenge to raise more than 1,000 pounds of food to support families struggling with the economic downturn.

With barrels in tow, the Air Force Reserve wing reached for the stars over 14 days to benefit Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc.

When the day arrived to "weigh-in," an Air Force class scale for weighing military vehicles was used. Ret. Col. Jim Germain, civilian director of family support; Ret. Col. Patty Braun, Tech. Sgt. Terry Jones and Capt. (Chaplain) Jim Bastian found that 1,020 pounds of peanut butter, canned vegetable, cereal, soup, macaroni and cheese, and juice boxes had been collected. The food was taken directly to Community Missions' food pantry.

Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc., founded in 1925, offers crisis housing, mental health services, residential care for individuals with HIV or AIDS and youth services. It also offers meals six days a week and a food pantry at 1570 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls.
