Pierogi, popcorn, local honey, in-season fruits and vegetables and plenty more can be found on Wednesdays, starting June 13, at the Wheatfield Farmers Market.

The Farmers Market will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot at the Town Hall campus, 2800 Church Road, near Niagara Falls Boulevard.

While the market officially opens next week, a special Grand Opening/Family Day also is planned for the following week on June 20, and other special event days are planned through the season.

At the Grand Opening/Family Day, the YMCA, which will be hosting a summer camp program in the Wheatfield Youth Center this summer, will provide a Bounce House, arts and crafts, games and face painting for the children. In addition "sample treats" will be provided.

This will be the market's third year. Judy Ponzi, market committee member, said she expects the numbers of vendors to grow as the season progresses.

"The return of many of our very loyal vendors has made what we feel is a 'friendly management style' success and hopefully is an indication of only good things to come," Ponzi said. "We not only provide the farmer's selections, but also "specialty" items, baked goods, crafts, etc. We welcome ideas from our residents in an effort to develop a larger, much needed local customer base."

This year's market, set up near the Youth Center, will include a "gathering area" for customers.

"We're looking for additional vendors, both produce, and specialty food and craft vendors," Ponzi said. Vendors must submit applications. "We don't want it to be a flea market; we want it to be nicer quality," she said.

The market was developed through the Town Centre Focus Group and is managed by town volunteers.

Ponzi said the market committee also is looking for more volunteers and for people willing to place signs on their property advertising the market.

Anyone interested in the Wheatfield Farmers Market as a vendor, a volunteer or in providing a sign location should call Town Clerk Kathy Harrington at 694-6441.
