The Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St., Lockport, announces a free program and book reading will be offered on Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m. by retired educator Carol Caisse, who will read her new children's book titled, "Jake Grape and the Snake."

Caisse is a former high school English teacher who taught for more than 30 years in Newfane.

"Jake Grape and the Snake" is her first book. Caisse recalls her mother telling her how as a child Carol used to like to crawl under the front porch at her grandmother's house and play with the baby snakes. "But I never tried to bring one into the house!" Caisse claims. "My mother was terrified of snakes. She would have had a stroke!"

Caisse was aided in this endeavor by her son, Ryan, who drew the illustrations for her book. The author lives in Lockport with her husband, Dennis.

Every child attending this family-friendly event will receive a complimentary 5-inch, glow-in-the-dark snake. Copies of "Jake Grape" will be available beginning June 9 at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, The History Center and online at www.NiagaraHistory.org. For further information, call 716-434-7433.
