Press release

Every year since 1979, Ben & Jerry's fans have asked the same question over and over: "Why?! Why do you give away free ice cream for one day every year?" The answer hasn't changed since the company celebrated its first anniversary and first annual Free Cone Day more than 30 years ago. Co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield created the event and gave out free scoops as a way to thank the community for its support and continued business.

On Tuesday, April 3, the Ben & Jerry's at 1994 Military Road (Fashion Outlets of Niagara), Niagara Falls, will throw open the doors, continue the tradition and celebrate Free Cone Day once again.

"Free Cone Day is in a league of its own," said John Breier, owner/operator of the local Niagara Falls Ben & Jerry's scoop shop. "Our fans are so passionate about who we are and what we're all about. It's the perfect opportunity for us employees to rally together, scoop lots of free cones, and support the same people who support us every day."

While the Niagara Falls Ben & Jerry's continues the time-tested annual Free Cone Day event, the company is bringing a taste of something new to the table with its most recent product line: Greek frozen yogurt. The brand new line, offered in four different flavors in Scoop Shops, is sure to catch the eye of some Free Cone Day attendees. The company uses real Greek yogurt - which is made through a traditional straining process - leaving a thicker, creamier and smooth product, which has been all the rage in the refrigerated aisle. These all new, "really Greekin' good" flavors include:

•Raspberry Fudge Chunk: raspberry Greek frozen yogurt with fudge chunks

•Banana Peanut Butter: banana Greek frozen yogurt with peanut butter swirls

•Blueberry Vanilla Graham: blueberry and vanilla Greek frozen yogurts with graham cracker swirls

•Vanilla: Vanilla Greek frozen yogurt

"Anyone who attends our annual Free Cone Day can easily see how special the day is," Breier said. "The lines are long and tend to stay long throughout the entire day, but that doesn't seem to faze people; they are always willing to wait in line. That speaks to how loyal our fans are!"

Keeping true to the company's social mission and the belief that business has a responsibility to give back to the community, the Niagara Falls scoop shop will partner with Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation, an organization providing a long term source of financial support for people with Developmental Disability, for Free Cone Day. The scoop shop will have donation bins throughout the store to collect funds from those stopping by for a free scoop on April 3.

This year, more people than ever are enjoying Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day as the number of Scoop Shops reaches approximately 800 around the globe from Europe to Asia and back to North America. Fans are excited to be a part of something fun, and seem to enjoy their just desserts from the company with a bottom line that is measured more than just by financial profit. Ben & Jerry's ice cream lovers come and enjoy the scene, the energy and the good vibe.
