With the national economy continuing to show multiple signs of weakness and a large number of Americans having left the job market entirely, county leaders are taking steps to help local job seekers find employment by hosting a job fair Wednesday.

Niagara County's Spring Job Fair will be held Wednesday, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., at the Four Points Sheraton, 7001 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls. There is no cost for job seekers.

The move by the County Legislature and Niagara County Director of Employment and Training Thomas Jaccarino comes amid persistently weak national unemployment figures. County leaders note that the national unemployment rate remains well above 8 percent - a figure that Jaccarino says is "completely unacceptable."

"The County Legislature has directed employment and training to make our resources fully available to our county's citizens as they go job hunting," Jaccarino said. "Despite the long-term nature of this weak national economy, we're taking steps locally to help. Wednesday, we'll bring 55 to 60 employers together with many hundreds of county residents who are looking for work."

Jaccarino and his team have organized several job fairs since he joined county government just over a year ago. In that time, Jaccarino has led efforts to pair up hundreds of unemployed and underemployed workers with companies that needed their talent.

"We're expecting at least 500 to 600 people to come to this job fair tomorrow," Jaccarino said. "That would be consistent with other job fairs we've held since this time last year. And that includes not only people looking to re-enter the workforce, but individuals looking for the opportunity to change careers."

The employers Jaccarino has lined up for the Lockport job fair include those in the medical, allied health, manufacturing, retail, transportation, and administrative fields.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their most up-to-date résumés. For further more information on the Spring Job Fair, contact employment and training at 716-278-8108 or the state Department of Labor at 716-433-6766.
