On Thursday, Sept. 29, the Lewiston-Porter boys varsity soccer team will conduct a canned food drive to benefit the Ransomville Community Services Food Pantry. All fans attending the game are encouraged to bring at least one non-perishable food item with them that evening. Donation bins will be placed outside the main gates at Elia Stadium prior to the 6:30 p.m. game versus Kenmore West.

Lew-Port Co-Captain Richard Minicucci explained, "Our entire team feels strongly about giving back to the community. We saw the positive effect the food drive had last year and decided it only made sense to bring it back for a second year."

In addition, Lew-Port boys soccer has scheduled a pre-game awards presentation to honor the leaders of the Niagara Pioneer Soccer League. A U-10 mini-soccer game will also take place at halftime. Varsity Soccer Coach Norm Forney said that NPSL has played a huge role in promoting the sport throughout the district.

"Many of our players have come up through their program and owe much of their success to the many volunteers, coaches and board members who are involved," he said. "Niagara Pioneer Soccer League is certainly a big part of our program and we are very grateful for their support."

Soccer is a longstanding tradition at Lew-Port, and the boys varsity squad has often been one of the top teams in the Niagara Frontier League. Lew-Port is once again considered a top divisional champion contender. The 2011 team hopes to build on last year's success, which included a league championship and being A2 finalists in the Section VI tournament.

The Ransomville food pantry is located at the Free Methodist Church in Ransomville. It officially opened on Dec. 2, 2010, and is operated by the Ransomville Community Services Advisory Board.  The food pantry is comprised of churches, schools and businesses working together to provide services to meet the community's needs. Services are available to all qualifying persons who reside in the 14131, 14092 and 14174 zip codes.
