Menu at Barker's Pizza, Wings and Things is a pretty young thing

Review by Joshua Maloni

I'd venture to say most of us have never seen meatloaf and mashed potatoes or homemade soup on a pizzeria menu. If, by some odd chance you have, then I'd wager a day's pay you've never read, "lemon pepper chicken salad with raspberry vinaigrette" in between slice prices and sub choices.

And yet, it's fitting to see such a far-out menu far out in Barker. If you're going to make the lengthy drive, it should be worth the price of gas, right?

Pizza, Wings and Things, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011, is an eclectic pizzeria fashioned in the mold of an old-fashioned diner. It has knick-knacks on the walls; local news, Barker birthdays and trivia on the tables; and homemade comfort food served by a friendly wait staff.

Moreover, PWT boasts a menu that reads like a phone book. Offerings include a full page of subs (including traditional favorites and house specials such as chicken finger and bacon, grilled chicken and ham or white pizza); 10 pizza pies (or choose your own toppings); wings; fingers; calzones; stromboli; 10 different salads; sandwiches; dinners ... you get the point. And, by the way, there's a separate dessert menu with treats including "mud-thick" milkshakes, pecan turtle and warm cinnamon fried dough sundaes.

The sizable menu is out of the ordinary - but then, so are the prices. Most dinners are priced under $10 and include sides. More than a dozen sandwich/french fry combos cost less than $7, and large salads are $8.95 or less.

When stopping for dinner this week, I ordered the sirloin burger deluxe with fries, a slice of pizza and a milkshake (hold your judgment; I was hungry!). In keeping with the too-good-to-be-true theme, my burger was atypically large, I had enough fries to feed a small planet, and the cheese and pepperoni wedge was the size of two regular pieces.

The food was of good quality. The burger was slightly more done than I requested, but still boasted plenty of grilled flavors. The fries were addictive, and the pickle had an unexpected zing of heat. The pizza slice was a little too cheesy for my taste, but the crunchy crust made up for that.

Coupled with the thick, chocolate milkshake (topped, of course, with real whipped cream), and a root beer, my bill came to a paltry $15. Considering I was full for a day-and-a-half, I'd say that was a pretty good deal.

Sitting in PWT, you get a sense that everything on the menu is good. The next time I'm in town, I'd like to try a cheeseburger pizza (la frois sauce, hamburger, smothered onions, mozzarella and American cheeses; $13.95) a barbecue rib sub ($4.95 half/$7.95 full), or (I said or!) that homemade meatloaf/mashed potato dish ($6.95 with vegetables, roll and butter).

Pizza, Wings and Things is located at 1693 Quaker Road, Barker. Summer hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The eatery also caters. For more information, call 795-3224.
