Rainbow, brown trout set for MacDougall Lake April 7
McDougall Lake, located in the popular Oppenheim Park recreation site, will be stocked with hundreds of rainbow trout and brown trout next week, the chairman of the Niagara County Legislature announced.
Legislature Chairman William L. Ross, C-Wheatfield, announced the news this morning, moments after he and fellow Wheatfield representative Legislator Danny W. Sklarski, D-Niagara, were notified of the stocking plan by Niagara County Parks and Recreation. Ross and Sklarski have long worked for various improvements to Oppenheim Park.
"This is another of those recreational venues that's very popular with the people," Ross explained shortly after being notified of the stocking plan. "After it's stocked, we have hundreds of Niagara County residents that choose to visit MacDougall Lake and who really enjoy the fishing. And we really do appreciate the state stocking it - this year and every year."
Ross said that the trout were set to be released April 7 at 10 a.m., and planned to visit the site himself to check on conditions at the park. Oppenheim Park is located 2713 Niagara Falls Blvd., Wheatfield.
The 92-acre park is open from Memorial Day weekend until September, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The park also features picnic shelters, as well as basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, a splash pool, and restroom facilities. Shelters can be rented from parks and recreation by calling 439-7950.
"What this does is provide another recreational activity for residents of Niagara County," Ross said. "I hope to see many of our fishermen - and women - at Oppenheim Park in the weeks that follow."
