John Bis, a Youngstown resident and member of the Lewiston Writers' Group, recently won first place in the mystery/crime fiction category of the Writers' Digest Popular Fiction Awards.  His prize for this highly competitive contest consists of a $500 cash award plus publication of his story, "Return to Calumet Creek."

During a career in teaching and administration at the University at Buffalo's School of Architecture and Planning, Bis' writing was focused on issues of planning and public policy. For the past several years he has been writing fiction, which, to some extent, Bis says isn't much different, reports the Lewiston Writers Group. He has completed a first novel, yet unpublished, and is working his way through a second.

Bis is an active participant with other writers in the Lewiston Writers' Group and credits them for helping make his writing more enjoyable and rewarding.
