Forecasts of a monstrous, paralyzing snowstorm Tuesday by the National Weather Service and on local newscasts, which resulted in massive closings and cancellations Wednesday in Erie and Niagara counties, for the most part failed to materialize. Motorists in some areas, as shown in these scenes from northern Niagara County, did contend with snowy, windswept roads and modest accumulations, while others further south in the Buffalo area found bare wet pavement on roadways Wednesday morning rather than feet of snow. But remember, winter's punch is still very much around as seen in this shot, below, of an Arctic-like Lake Ontario off Fort Niagara, despite Ground Hog Day predictions by Punxsutawney Phil, Dunkirk Dave and others for an early spring.
