'Man v. Food' jumps on Haystack

Adam Richman and the "Man v. Food" TV crew returned to Western New York Thursday. They filmed a segment at The Silo Restaurant in Lewiston for an episode set to air in mid-September.

Throughout the day, Richman mingled with dozens of patrons (including several Kiwanians) on hand to watch the taping. At 12:30 p.m., the easygoing host tried his hand at the eatery's signature foot-long Haystack sandwich, accompanied by restaurant manager Alan Hastings.

"It's awesome to be featured on such a great program," Hastings said. "It's definitely an honor."

Several different versions of that scene were filmed but, in one particular recording, Richman more or less told Philadelphians that they need to take note of Lewiston's steak sandwich. The Haystack is a half-pound of seasoned steak (or more if you order the foot-long), covered in melted mozzarella cheese, and topped with crispy shoestring potatoes inside a hoagie roll.

Not only did Richman eat the Haystack, he also learned how to make one inside The Silo kitchen. 

"He loved the Haystack," Hastings said. "He thought it was awesome."

Richman also sampled beef on weck and sweet potato fries. In a bit he filmed with two young girls, Richman revealed how the Buffalo-born sandwich got its name.

Each 30-minute episode of "Man v. Food" features three restaurants: two chosen for quality, and one for quantity. Richman visits a pair of eateries known for culinary excellence before tackling an outlandish food challenge (think 11-pound pizza, 12-pound hamburger, ghost chili-flavored chicken wings) at the third location.

Last month, Richman and his crew visited the Riverstone Grill on Grand Island to try an almost 3-pound "Bone in the Stone" steak, which was paired with 20 ounces of fries and corn on the cob. (Click the link below for a full review.)

While in the area, Richman visited Mick & Angelo's, a restaurant on Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was there he filmed his "Man v. Food" showdown -- "The Italian Challenge." According to a local dining guide, this meal consists of hearty Italian vegetable soup, lasagna, spaghetti, meatballs, manicotti, cannelloni, chicken parmigiana, sausage, garlic loaf and apple crisp. Oh, and Richman had to down all of that in 90 minutes or face a $39.95 penalty and placement on the "Wall of Shame."
