Lewiston Public Library July programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of July.

  • A Freelance Writing for Professionals workshop with Dave Lukow, an award-winning journalist and writer, will be taught on Thursday July 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The workshop is geared to helping the freelance writer/journalist survive in a challenged economy. Call the library at 754-4720 or stop by to register.

The workshop is made possible, in part, with funds from the Arts Niagara Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Tonawandas' Council of the Arts/Carnegie Art Center.

  • The Children's Summer Reading Program, "Make a Splash - Read" begins Monday, July 5 at 5:30 p.m. and continues for six weeks. Monday's schedule includes registration, crafts and a concert featuring Glenn Colton at 6:30 p.m. The program features lap reader programs for children up to 4 years of age, and independent reader programs for children ages 5 years and older. Also included are summer visitors and a field trip to the Aquarium of Niagara Falls. The program concludes with a beach party and basket raffle on Aug. 13 at 4 p.m. Registration is required.

  • A summer reading program for adults begins Monday, July 5, and continues through Friday, Aug. 13. Participants can register at the circulation desk to pick up a reading record, and can turn in the completed registration form at the circulation desk for raffle tickets for the library's Chinese auction. Prize baskets are made possible through donations from the Friends of the Library, DiMino's Lewiston Tops, the Buffalo Bisons and the Buffalo Sabres. A prize drawing will be held Monday, Aug. 16.
  • Summer visitors expected at the library on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. include: July 7, Lewiston Police Department K-9 Radar and his handler LPD Officer Scott Stafford; July 14, the Niagara County Mounted Police; July 21, the U.S. Coast Guard and Coasty; July 28, Lewiston No. Fire Volunteer Fire Co.

Clubs and More

  • The Lewiston Book Club meets Tuesday, July 6, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.
  • Mom's Book Chat, a book discussion group for moms, will meet on Wednesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Animal Dreams" by Barbara Kingsolver. Child care is provided for registered participants. The library is closed to the public during this event.
  • The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Open to all ages, no registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.
  • The Lewiston Writers' Group meets Mondays, July 5 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Meeting time consists of members reading their work and receiving feedback from others, sharing information helpful to writers, and receiving advice regarding any writing difficulties encountered. Guest speakers will be scheduled as available. For more information, contact Debra Sherman at 754-8408.
  • The Dead Beats Society will meet Monday, July 5, at 6 p.m. in the library's local history room. Those interested in assisting with the digitization process of the library's obituary collection are welcome to attend. The project is sponsored by the Jon F. Popkey Genealogy Room and is part of a continuing effort to allow easier access to family history records. Call Michelle at the library for details, or e-mail at [email protected].
  • The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a used book room all year long; it's open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.
  • July meetings include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, July 5, at 5 p.m.; Friends of the Library, Tuesday, July 13, at 6 p.m.; the Riverwalk Association, Monday, July 26, at 5:15 p.m.; and the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works Restoration Advisory Board, Tuesday, July 27, at 5 p.m.

Children's Events

  • Miss Ann requests the help of Go Green Club and Science Explorer Club members in watering trees planted at the library last spring. Watering will take place every Friday at 2 p.m. during the summer.
  • Lap Reader programs for children up to 4 years of age will be offered Mondays at 10:30 a.m. July 12 is "Splish Splash Water Play"; July 19, "Hooray for Fish"; July 26, "Boats."
  • Independent reader programs are offered on Tuesdays. Included are: July 13, the "Water Cycle" at 4 p.m.; July 20, the Aquarium of Niagara Falls field trip. Tickets are $5 per adult and $3 per child. Meet at the library at 1:45 p.m. On July 27, it's "Pirates" at 4 p.m.
  • Story time with Mrs. Leardini, a traditional story time for children of all ages, is offered Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Saturdays for the summer.
