Work is expected to begin Tuesday, April 18, on a $160,000 project to replace the two main roofs on the Lewiston Public Library. Progressive Roofing Inc. of Buffalo, the low bidder on the project, anticipates completing the work in about three weeks.

"We expect to be open during the entire course of the work," said Jill Palermo, director of the library. However, she noted the initial tear-off of the old roofs, which is expected to take about a week, will produce more noise than library patrons generally experience.

"The contractor is aware of our hours of operation and will seek to perform noisier aspects of the job during the hours before the library opens," Palermo said.

Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Nussbaumer & Clarke Inc., a Buffalo engineering firm, is serving as project engineer.

The project, which consists of replacing the library's main roof and a smaller roof over the children's addition at the rear of the 27-year-old building, is being financed, in part, through a $120,000 grant from the New York State Education Department's Public Library Construction Grant Program. The library is financing the remaining costs, including engineering fees, through its capital construction budget.

Replacement of the roofs was identified as the main priority in the library's five-year strategic plan, which was adopted in 2015. A number of leaks have occurred in various sections of the library over the past several years. An earlier $8,500 project repaired leaks in a third roof over the community room.
